As a rule, I don’t believe anything that comes out of Real Madrid. But the following statement made by current Real Madrid manager Bernd Schuster about Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is a bit interesting:
“He’s the star at Manchester United and until they win the Champions League and another league title or two then they aren’t going to let him go. So in the short term I don’t think it will be possible to sign him.
But in a couple of years, yes, I believe he could be wearing the white shirt at the Bernabeu.”
This is interesting because it’s the classic template for pissing the hell out of others.
I recommend that all Premier League managers make similar statements about players they want to sign. Can you imagine the ruckus that will happen once Benitez, Wenger and Ferguson start dropping player names left and right and talk about signing them? Ferguson complimented Benzema’s talents and he got rapped for it – if he had said the above, he would have crucified.
By the way, there’s a greater chance of Schuster being fired this summer than there is of Ronaldo leaving Manchester United before the 2010 World Cup (at least). So shouldn’t Quieroz mention this in his next interview? Something like:
“He’s a great manager and he’s done well to bring Real Madrid to where they are in the league this season. I think he’d like to win the league and have another crack at the Champions League next season.
But if there’s one thing you can count on at Madrid, it is firing managers. Yes, I think Schuster will be fired this summer.”
Come on Carlos – this is your chance to put the bullies in their place. Don’t let us down.
