Ronaldo: I Want To Leave Manchester United

Manchester United fans will wake up today to news that Ronaldo has confirmed what everyone feared: He doesn’t want to play for Manchester United anymore.

It’s hard to know who will be more angry – England fans who saw Ronaldo play a role in getting his Manchester United team mate and England counterpart Wayne Rooney sent off in the England-Portugal quarter-final”>England-Portugal quarter-final, or Manchester United club, team and fans, who have backed Ronaldo publicly and privately through what can only be described as three unfulfilling years at Old Trafford.

The moment of truth came after the England-Portugal match when Ronaldo finally broke his silence and spoke to the press. When he was asked about the reports linking him to Real Madrid and Villar Mir and the interview supposedly published in Spanish daily Marca, Ronaldo admitted that they were true and said that he would decide “his life” after the World Cup.

The knee-jerk reaction is to call Ronaldo a traitor, and what little support he had left at Manchester United after the Rooney red card will now surely erode away. And when United return to Old Trafford on Monday (July 3rd) to begin pre-season training, one of the first things Ferguson may well do is to put Ronaldo on the transfer market.

A bit extreme? I think not. As long as United can recoup their investment in him (so that should make the transfer fee at least 25 million pounds) and get the money upfront (they’ve only received 18 million for Beckham’s sale so far), United will not mind losing a player who has his heart set at playing elsewhere.
