Atletico Madrid are interested to sign out of contract Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, according to reports from Spanish outlet Sport.

The 35-year-old played a starring role for Manchester United last season, scoring 28 goals from 46 appearances to guide the club win the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

However, Ibrahimovic damaged his cruciate ligaments in the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Anderlecht and has been sidelined until January which saw Manchester United opt against offering him a contract extension for a further 12 months. Although, he will complete his rehabilitation at the club’s training complex after being offered full use of their facilities.

And Atletico Madrid are now considering a move for the prolific centre forward as they continue their pursuit to bolster their squad for the January transfer window. The Los Colchoneros have been handed a transfer ban by Fifa that will prevent them from signing any player until the winter transfer window, seemingly close to when Ibrahimovic is expected to return from his dismal injury setback.

According to reports from Sport, Atletico Madrid are preparing to offer a short-term contract to Ibrahimovic in January, which could see him play alongside Chelsea’s want-away striker Diego Costa as he continues his pursuit to return to the Spanish capital.

In his lasting illustrious career, Ibrahimovic has already had a short spell in Spain when he joined Barcelona in 2009 in a reported transfer deal that involved £59 million plus player exchange deal that saw Samuel Eto’o head into the other direction, Inter Milan.

The 35-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to MLS side LA Galaxy, although his agent Mino Raiola believes that Manchester United could offer him a short-term contract themselves, should he swiftly return to full fitness by the turn of the year.
