Wolves are chasing the signature of Manchester United defender Chris Smalling according to a report published by The Birmingham Mail.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is looking to bring in a new centre-back before the end of the transfer window and this means that Smalling is likely to drop down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Smalling has just one year left on his contract at United and he could be made available cheaply if United do listen to offers for him.

Wolves who won the Championship title last season have so far enjoyed an impressive summer transfer window as they have brought in the likes of Joao Moutinho, Rui Patricio and Benik Afobe.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side do however need to bring in more reinforcements if they want to build a team which can be competitive in the Premier League next season.

Smalling arrived at United from Fulham in 2010 as a highly-rated youngster.

Since then he has won two Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League with the club.

However, as a result of inconsistent form last season, he was left out of the England squad which played at the World Cup and needs to start playing regularly again if he wishes to once again don the jersey of the Three Lions in future.
