Liverpool will travel to St Mary’s on Saturday to take on Southampton in the Premier League where the Reds will be looking to close the gap with other title contenders.

Ahead of the match, Brendan Rodgers gave few positive updates regarding team news. In the press conference, he said that defender Mamadou Sakho returned to training this week but it is still doubtful whether he would start, after such a long time out.

In that case, Daniel Agger could retain his place. The Dane came under criticism from Rodgers, while The Times even speculated that the stylist defender may not have a long future at Anfield.

Glen Johnson returned to first team actions against Swansea and the England international is expected to retain his place on the right side. Jon Flanagan has been impressive this season and the youngster will continue on the left-back role in place of Aly Cissokho.

Liverpool deploy a flexible front 4, where Sterling-Suarez and Sturridge often interchange their position with Coutinho acting as the central creative force in the side. Joe Allen did put up an impressive cameo against the Swans but it is highly unlikely that he would start against Southampton that play high pressing football.

Prediction: 1-2; Southampton have won their last 3 home matches against Liverpool in all competitions but the Reds are in good form at the moment, having won their last 3 matches in the league.
