Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne is set to undergo a medical at Liverpool on Monday. If everything works out according to the plans, Liverpool could announce the deal within next 48 hours.

According to a report published by ESPN, the England international is expected to sign a five-year-contract at Liverpool. The two clubs had already agreed a deal last week.

Southampton rejected Liverpool’s initial bid of £10m in May, but later when the Merseyside club returned with an improved offer (initial fee of £12.5m plus performance related bonuses), the deal was finally sealed.

Clyne had one year left on his current contract and Southampton found it best to cash in on him now than losing him for free next season. The 24-year-old defender has made four appearances for England and he is all set to complete the formalities of his move to Anfield, following his return from holiday.

Right back is one area where Brendan Rodgers stressed the importance of strengthening this summer. With Glen Johnson left the club as free agent, Javier Manquillo, loan signing from Atletico Madrid, struggled to cement regular starting place, and Jon Flanagan yet to return to full fitness, the Reds were left with no options than to sign a top quality right-back.

Clyne will become Liverpool’s sixth signing of the simmer, following the arrivals of Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomes, James Milner, Danny Ings and Roberto Firmino.
