Chelsea hierarchy are determined to sign a premier striker during the January transfer window and they have identified the Napoli hitman Gonzalo Higuain as the ideal candidate.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa is struggling to replicate last season’s form and Radamel Falcao has been a massive flop since swapping Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge.

Backup striker Loic Remy has chipped in with goals but the former Newcastle striker is not of the required standard.

Jose Mourinho knows that he will need to add goals to his side in order to compensate for his fragile defence and Higuain has been earmarked as the man to do that.

The former Real Madrid striker is one of the elite forwards in world football and has scored more than 200 goals with River Plate, Real Madrid and Napoli.

The Argentine forward has also proven himself at the international stage with 25 goals in 52 appearances.

Higuain is a lethal finisher and is likely to thrive on the service from Hazard, Fabregas, Oscar and Willian.

Chelsea have lacked a proper number nine this season and with Costa showing no signs of a revival, the Chelsea officials are keen to do a deal for the Argentine striker.

Furthermore, Higuain has played under Jose Mourinho before and was a key player for him at Real Madrid. The pair have a good working relationship and that could be a sweetener for any potential deal.

It is unlikely that Napoli will sell their best player in January but Chelsea believe that a big money offer could tempt the Italian outfit.

Higuain would love the chance to play for an elite European club like Chelsea. Furthermore, a chance to play in the Champions League is hard to turn down.

The question is, can Chelsea convince Napoli? It is worth remembering that Serie A sides have always been willing sellers for the right price.
