Mata has been the player of the season for Chelsea on twice occasions, but somehow he didn’t fit into the plans and system of Mourinho. The Portuguese reflected that the offer they received for the Spaniard was right and hailed his contribution saying he was fantastic for Chelsea.

Mourinho, who initially insisted that the player won’t be sold in the January transfer window, said that the decision has been taken keeping in mind the pressure of Financial Fair Play and further it will allow them to strengthen the squad elsewhere.

Chelsea didn’t waste enough time to make the necessary reinforcement, as they moved in quickly to snatch Mohamed Salah, who was also a target of Liverpool. Further, the Chelsea boss has commented on the transfer of Salah, saying the agreement has been completed with Basel. Mourinho however added that he is not looking to add any more players in the January transfer window, and certainly not a striker. Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has been linked with a loan move to AC Milan. Mourinho added: “Essien is at this moment in a position where he can go or stays. If he stays, we are more than happy, fantastic team player.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger complained about the transfer of Mata to Manchester United and said he was surprised to see Chelsea selling a key player to a rival club.

Mourinho returned with a sharp riposte, said: “Wenger complaining is normal because he always does. It’s something we know.”
