According to reports from Italy, Mauro Icardi’s contract extension with Inter Milan is being held up as the striker has been subjected to a €30m bid from newly crowned Premier League Champions Chelsea.
It is believed that the young Argentine was on the verge of signing a contract extension with the Nerazzurris but there has been no official confirmation from the club. The 22 year old has scored 18 goals in 31 Serie A appearances this season and was also earlier linked with the the Blues.
The report from Football Italia also cites another media Italian media outlet SportMediaset claiming that Chelsea are preparing a bid of €30m for Icardi.
The player also admitted that right now the renewal is difficult but he loves the people of San Siro. Icardi was quoted saying, “The people of San Siro love me, and I respect them so much. I try to make them happy in every game. I’m young, I’m only 22, and I hope I can have a career like Zanetti did. Although if I score 200 Serie A goals I’ll probably retire earlier than he did!”
This is not the first time that Icardi’s extension with Inter has been held up. Back in March we had reported that Icardi’s image rights had caused a dispute and talks had stalled. The club’s General director Marco Fassone however was hopeful an agreement would be reached.
It will be however interesting to see how Inter deals with this tricky situation at hand. Will they decide to cash in on the player or will resist the prospect of selling their prized asset.
Icardi will be a terrific addition for Chelsea and could forge an unstoppable attacking force with Diego Costa up front. There have been reports that Didier Drogba could leave which means Mourinho will try to bring in an attcker in the summer.
