Martin Montoya, the Barcelona defender has been left frustrated this season for lack of first team opportunities. It has reached that melting point where he feels the time is right for one final discussion, as the January transfer window approaches in a month’s time.

Catalan based newspapers have written lots of articles on him speculating on his future in the past few months. The Spanish right-back was a reported target of Liverpool in the summer, but he never wanted to leave his home club and signed a long term contract at Barcelona, the also saw his release clause bumped to €20m

The club wanted him to become the long term successor of Dani Alves, and henceforth the lucrative contract. But, things have gone from bad to worse, following the appointment of new coach Luis Enrique.

With only one start in the entire season, it remains a mystery what has gone for him. It seems like Enrique doesn’t have enough faith in the defender, who has dropped down the pecking orders.

Back in mid November, we covered an article, via Sport, who claimed Barcelona have given the youngster green signal to join any foreign club in January. Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen and Inter Milan have had registered their interest – but Liverpool could be his possible destination, the newspaper speculated.

Sport even claimed that Barcelona will access all possible offers and may add a buy-back clause in his contract, in case he moves permanently.

Mundo Deportivo, another popular Catalan based newspaper reports that Montoya’s agent Juan de Dios Carrasco will hold discussions with Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta next week, where his future will be sorted out.

Mundo claim that Montoya has offer from England, and although they didn’t mention the name of the club, we know very well who that club could be.

The question is will Liverpool make a move for him? The future of Glen Johnson seemingly lie away from Anfield, and therefore Montoya could be seen as a like for like replacement. But do Liverpool at all need a full-back? His inclusion might hamper the progress of Jon Flanagan, the youngster, who broke through from the club’s youth academy.

Moreover, adding a right-back is not Liverpool’s first priority at the moment. It remains to be seen how Liverpool approach the January transfer window, but one thing is pretty clear – Montoya’s Barcelona future is as good as over.
