Could Manchester United have a new right-back in January?

Manchester United have today been linked with signing Everton right-back Séamus Coleman.

Rafael and Antonio Valencia are currently Louis van Gaal’s options in that position, although Phil Jones and Chris Smalling too have a wealth of experience playing on the right side of defence.

It seems set that the Dutch manager is going to stick with his diamond formation that includes four at the back after picking up six points from a possible nine since moving away from the unsuccessful 3-4-1-2.

The Guardian have this morning made the claim that United are interested in the Republic of Ireland international who scored six goals in 36 Premier League appearances from that position last season.

Whether or not Manchester United would be able to pull him away from Goodison Park with manager Roberto Martínez reluctant to sell any of his first-team players, remains to be seen.

There is still more than three months until the transfer window opens in January, giving the current crop of players a chance to impress Louis van Gaal before he dips into the market again to sign new players for the second half of the season.
