Manchester United have sealed a 1-0 victory over CSKA Moscow in the midweek Champions League clash. The win saw them end their three match goalless run as Wayne Rooney’s header in the second half helped Red Devils avoid a fourth consecutive 0-0 draw.
Louis van Gaal saw his side concede a goal in their 1-1 draw against CSKA Moscow last month. Following that match, United have not conceded in four matches played in all competitions. Ander Herrera is delighted with his side’s defensive record and hopes that could help the Old Trafford club achieve success.
Chelsea had a very good defensive record last season, which saw them win the Premier League and the Capital One Cup. They had the best back four last season as they allowed only 32 goals in their title winning campaign.
The former Athletic Bilbao midfielder remains hopeful United can emulate Chelsea’s last season defensive form in order to achieve success this term.
“It’s a positive that we’re not conceding goals. We saw it last year with Chelsea; I don’t think they scored too many goals, but they didn’t concede many either. That’s important when you want to have a great season, you can’t give away many chances,” Herrera told ManUtd.com.
“I think we controlled the game against Moscow. We only conceded one chance, which was good. We also created 10 or 12 chances, which was also good – we want to control games and did that today.”
Chelsea, who went on a brilliant run last season are currently struggling just months after winning the title in May. So far in 2015-16 campaign, they have already conceded 22 goals in 11 matches, which averages two goals per game.
The Blues have 11 points after 11 matches and sit 15th in the table. United, on the other hand, conceded only eight goals and share the best defensive record in England’s top flight along with Arsenal.
