Back in late February, we had reported that Manchester United had a €35m bid for Nikolas Otamendi rejected by Valencia. The Argentine has been one of the key figures for the Mestalla side this season who are currently third in the La Liga standings and aiming for a Champions League berth.

There is no secret that United will desperately try to strengthen their defense in the summer. While Mats Hummels looks the most likelier of options, United’s interest on Otamendi have resurfaced once again. However, Valencia have set a €50m transfer clause on the player and have no intentions to sell their prized asset.

However reports from Valencia based media outlet Deporte Valenciano suggest that Atletico Madrid have also entered the race to sign the 27 year old. But the report claims that there is no way that Valencia will the player to one of their domestic rivals. Also, Atletico might not be willing to spend the whopping €50m to secure Otamendi’s services.

The Red Devils though who have a size-able transfer kitty and as the report suggests, are willing to do anything to improve their weak defensive line. The Daily Mail had in fact reported a couple of days ago that United had sent Spanish scout Carlos Ruiz to check up on Otamendi.

So will United splash the cash for the player? An interesting summer awaits.
