Manchester United will have to pay around £80m wages to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford. Real Madrid, however, are willing to cash in on a move that should alert several European heavy weights including Chelsea and Manchester City.

According to reports from The Times, intermediaries have made contact with Manchester United (and other clubs) informing them about Ronaldo’s availability in the next summer transfer market.

Soccer: Friendly-Portugal vs Ireland

Jorge Mendes, Ronaldo’s agent is looking for a mega deal that would tie his client till 2019. Keeping his current wage in account, on a four year contract, a £380,000-a-week deal would cost about £79m that excludes transfer fee and other bonuses.

Ronaldo currently earns about €21m a year, £16.4m or £315,384 a week, and costs Real Madrid £34.1m a season. It equates to £693,844 gross under the UK’s 45% tax bracket for high earners; therefore Ronaldo will have to take a significant pay-cut if he were to return to United.

Wayne Rooney is currently United’s highest paid player on £300,000 per week wages. Ronaldo, winner of double Fifa world player of the year, is a player of superior class than Rooney, and United would be prepared to break their pay structure to offer him around £400,000 per week.

Ronaldo has only signed his new contract with Real Madrid 12 months ago and suspicion grows whether he would commit rest of his playing career with the Spanish club. Louis van Gaal has openly admitted he would be interested to bring back Ronaldo, but it remains to be seen whether United actually pay such amount for the Portugal international who will turn 30 in February.
