José Mourinho is interested in the Atlético Madrid defender José Giménez if the latest rumours are to be believed.

Mourinho is not happy with his defensive options this season and the likes of Smalling, Blind and Rojo have failed to convince him so far. As per the reports, Mourinho is plotting a 50 million pounds move for the 21-year-old centre-back and wants him to partner Eric Bailly at the heart of United’s defense.

Daily Mirror are reporting that Giménez is Mourinho’s number one priority right now. Giménez is a key player for Diego Simeone and the Spanish giants are unlikely to sanction a sale. The Manchester United manager might have to wait until summer to sign the Uruguayan.

Giménez has a 56 million pounds release clause and if Manchester United decide to trigger it, they can get the player whenever they want. So Mirror‘s report of Mourinho having to wait until summer to sign him for 50 million pounds is a bit strange.

Giménez could make a huge difference to United’s season and considering United’s resources, why would they wait until the end of the season to save just 6 million pounds?

Time will tell if Mirror‘s report holds any truth. But there is no doubt that an addition like Giménez could galvanize the club and save their season.

Manchester United certainly have the resources and attraction to pull off a deal like this. The only obstacle for them could be the player’s willingness to move. If they fail to convince the South American to join the club, their financial muscle will make no difference.
