Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes the Premier League needs to have a break during the mid-season in order to help England achieve success.

The Three Lions managed to win the World Cup only once in 1966 and are yet to lift the European championship. Earlier in the summer, Roy Hodgson saw his side being eliminated from the group stages of the World Cup in Brazil. In the 2012 European championship, England made it to the last eight of the tournament.

The former Danish international believes giving a break in the middle of the season will help the players to perform at the top level during the major tournaments.

“I don’t mind the Christmas programme as it’s a tradition. I have been through the festive period as a player and it’s tough. But I still think The Premier League should have a break,” Schmeichel explains.

“For England itself, once they get into European championship or World Cup, the players are completely drained. I think there should be a break in January of two weeks.”

“Then you push the season in order to fall in line with other leagues in Europe, which allows a period of one or two weeks before major tournaments.”

“At the moment, the Premier League stops much earlier than other leagues and then the players needs to re-start again, which is crazy. That’s why England never does well in major tournaments,” the treble winning keeper concluded.

It should be seen whether England will manage to achieve any success in the 2016 European championship. They will be facing tough competition from World Champions Germany and defending champions Spain in the upcoming tournament.
