Manchester United are targeting Benfica’ attacking midfielder Nico Gaitan according to the Portuguese press, with David Moyes looking to continue the club’s attacking revamp this January.

United are expected to complete the signing of Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata later on today, and according to Portuguese newspaper ‘Record’, the club are also looking to bring in Benfica’s Gaitan, in what would be the start of a new-look midfield.

It is not the first time the 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. The player’s agent Jose Iribarren revealed his client’s desire to play in the Premier League back in April last year,

‘He would love to play in England, but Spain and Italy also speak to him,’ said Iribarren when asked about United’s interest,

Recently however, Gaitan has said that he respected his contract at the Estádio da Luz,

“I am at Benfica now. I have a contract until 2016 and I want to respect that,” the Argentine told reporters,

“If an offer comes in like the one that Benfica received for Nemanja Matic, we’ll see what happens.

“But for now, I am just thinking about playing football and the rest does not depend on me.”

With the aforementioned contract comes a €45m buyout clause, and as with the likes of Axel Witsel, David Luiz, and Nemanja Matic, Benfica certainly drive a hard bargin.

But while Record claims that negotiations have not formally begun, United remain the main suitors for his signature, with a January bid rumoured to be on the cards.

What do you think? Would Gaitan and Mata be a good partnership? Let me know in the comments below…
