Manchester United have confirmed their defender Reece James has left the club and joined Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.

After being promoted to the first team in 2013, he had to wait for one more year to make his first team debut in the league cup defeat against MK Dons. He had an impressive pre-season tour before the start of the 2014-15 season.

James was included in the squad in the opening Premier League defeat to Swansea City last August. However, lack of playing time forced him to leave the club on-loan during the last term.

The left-back has now left the club and joined Wigan Athletic on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

A statement on United’s official website read, “Reece James has joined Wigan Athletic on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.”

“The 21-year-old Bacup-born defender signed professional forms in 2012 and he became an important part of Warren Joyce’s Under-21s side, but it was in summer 2014 that he came to prominence when Louis van Gaal included him in his squad for the pre-season tour in the US. Everyone at Manchester United would like to wish Reece well in the future.”

With James’ departure, manager Louis van Gaal has Luke Shaw as the first choice left-back in the squad. In addition to this, versatile duo of Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo can feature in that position.
