Manchester United have agreed to extend Antonio Valencia’s contract for another 12 months.

The Ecuador international had six months left on his deal and the Premier League giants have triggered the clause which will extend his deal for another year. Manchester United have confirmed the deal on their official website.

Valencia has been a key player for Jose Mourinho this season and has kept the likes of Darmian and Fosu-Mensah out of the team with his performances.

The 31-year-old joined Manchester United as a winger and was phenomenal for them under Sir Alex Ferguson. Over the years, Valencia has established himself as an accomplished right back. Valencia has been an outstanding servant for the Old Trafford outfit and has played 271 times for the Red Devils and has scored 21 goals during his time at the club.

Manchester United are lacking experience at the back and keeping Valencia for another season makes a lot of sense. The likes of Shaw, Fosu-Mensah, Bailly are all quite young and someone like Valencia could be the ideal mentor for them. The South American has been an exemplary professional since joining the club in 2009.

With just six months left on his contract, Valencia was free to talk to other clubs regarding a move from this month. But the player is now expected to remain at Old Trafford next season.
