Manchester City are close to wrapping up the deal for their fourth signing of the summer after agreeing a £52m deal for Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy. The club has signed England international Kyle Walker from Spurs (£45m), Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva (£43m) and Brazilian keeper Ederson Moraes (£35m).
The 23-year-old France left-back joined Monaco from Ligue 1 club Marseille just last summer and enjoyed a good season at his new club, representing them 34 times and helping them finish with the league title, a first in 17 years.
If the deal progresses from here and Mendy does become a City player post completing his medical and agreeing personal terms, his fee would surpass the initial £45m paid by City for right-back Kyle Walker earlier this month and the £47.5m deal for centre-back John Stones last summer.
Pep Guardiola is leaving no stone unturned in revamping the back-line, one that has often proved calamitous in the club’s hunt for trophies. City are also closing in on Real Madrid’s Danilo.
If Man City wrap up the signings of Mendy (£52m) and Danilo (£30m), that’ll be £309.6m spent on defenders and keepers alone since 2014/15.

City’s best defender by far remains an injury-ravaged captain, who arrived for £6m in August 2008. Vincent Kompany’s fitness record, however, ensures his manager cannot rely on him and it is little wonder, City are spending so much in the transfer market. It remains to be seen though, if these new additions can help in forming a solid defensive unit.
