It has been a fantastic transfer window for Manchester United so far. The Red Devils have been proactive to address weaknesses in their squad and have signed accordingly to mount a significant title challenge for the coming season.
Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian have been recruited for £22m and £12.5m respectively while Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin have arrived for a combined £38m. Thus the Old Trafford side wouldn’t love any sort of distraction from here on.
Angel Di Maria’s contract situation though is giving Louis Van Gaal a headache. Reports from the Guardian suggests that the Argentine is unsettled in Manchester and has informed the manager that he and his wife are minded to leave. Van Gaal though wants to convince Di Maria to stay despite a disappointing show from the winger last term.
However, Van Gaal doesn’t wish to keep an unhappy player in his squad and could sell the Argentine to French Champions Paris St Germain. However, he wants Edinson Cavani in return. This completely makes sense from the Dutch Legend’s perspective.
United are in search of a striker this summer after Robin Van Persie departed for Fenerbache while Javier Hernandez doesn’t feature in Van Gaal’s plans. The 28 year old Cavani has been linked with a move this summer as he is unhappy having to play out wide rather than his preferred central position up front.
The Guardian also reports that Van Gaal respects Di Maria’s concern for the well being of his family. The Cheshire home they rented was the subject of an attempted break-in in March. The incident prompted Di Maria and his family to relocate and as a result he is considering his future at Old Trafford.
It certainly seems a busy summer transfer window for the Red Devils but it would be sad for the club’s fans to see a player like Di Maria leave after just one season. On the flip side United do require a striker to bolster their attacking options. Moreover, not many world class strikers are available in the transfer window this summer. Thus it remains to be seen what will be Van Gaal’s next move. Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see.
