Emre CanBayer Leverkusen have confirmed Liverpool’s interest in signing Emre can in the summer transfer window.

The Daily Mail report suggested the Merseyside side club are keen on landing the midfielder as Brendan Rodgers was preparing a £10m bid in bringing him to Anfield. Now the Bundesliga club’s sporting director Rudi Voller has revealed the Reds are keen on securing Can’s signature.

“We know of their interest but there is nothing official. Of course Emre has a clause in his contract now. We’re still waiting for a decision. [A €12 million (£10m) return on a €5.5m (£4.5m)] investment would be lucrative business,” Voller told the German newspaper Bild.

“But that is not the sticking point. We are of the opinion that Emre would do well with another year with us. Roger Schmidt has already spoken to him, he is really into the player. I am convinced that Can would be even better with Roger.”

The 20-year-old has been in impressive form for Leverkusen with his stellar performances in the Bundesliga outfit’s midfield. The former Swansea boss has set his sights on signing Can and turn him into a central midfielder, who could be a long-term replacement for Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard.

Can was signed by Leverkusen from Bayern Munich last summer. In his debut season at BayArena, the midfielder has a brilliant run, despite turning 20 earlier in January. Liverpool’s hope of signing the German U21 international could be blocked by the Bavarian club.

“Of course I spoke with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on the subject. Bayern think that another season at Leverkusen would be right for Emre,” Voller said when asked about Bayern’s buy back clause.
