Liverpool manager, Jürgen Klopp, made an enquiry to Nottingham Forest about their highly talented young striker, Ben Brereton, this week.
The 17-year-old striker played against Liverpool U18s in the FA Youth Cup in February, and impressed the club officials. According to reports, Klopp has personally called up Forest’s academy director, Gary Brazil, on Wednesday to enquire about the forward. It remains to be seen whether Liverpool take serious action by making a formal offer for the player.
The interest in Brereton could be genuine as the player is enjoying a rich vein of form at the moment. Brereton has scored 15 goals in 20 games for Forest U-23, including four in a 5-0 victory away to Queens Park Rangers in October. He also scored twice against Chesterfield in the Central League Cup loss on Tuesday. However, the youngster is yet to make a senior appearance for his current club.
Nottingham rate the youngster very highly, with the Forest owner, Fawaz Al Hasawi, suggesting that he expects the youngster to play for many years to come.
“Ben is a player we admire greatly, and we are all looking forward to seeing him progress with us,” he said to Nottingham Post.
Liverpool are likely to face a strong competition from Manchester United, who are reportedly planning to lodge a formal bid for the youngster. The Red Devils are ‘mulling over a seven-figure offer’ for Brereton to lure him away from the City ground.
He has signed a new contract with Forest on New Year’s Eve, which may prove to be a hindrance to sign him in January. Forest are going through a period of considerable change, with the club currently undergoing a takeover and restricted by a transfer embargo. This, therefore, could be a good time for big clubs to take full advantage of the situation by signing some of their key players.
