Liverpool have suffered a blow in re-signing their former midfielder Xabi Alonso next summer after Spanish journalist Pipi Estrada revealed that the Real Madrid midfielder is likely to sign a two-year deal with a club in the United States.

The former Reds midfielder’s contract with the La Liga giants runs down at the end of the season and the nine-time European champions have not agreed Alonso’s stay at Santiago Bernabeu.

The Merseyside club have long been linked in bringing their former midfielder to Anfield, where he played an integral role in the Reds’ midfield during their Champions League success in 2005.

Alonso left Liverpool in 2009 and completed his move to Madrid, which saw the Spanish capital club play €30million for his services. However, the Los Blancos are not yet convinced in handing the midfielder a new deal, who will turn 32 next month.

According to Estrada as quoted in Punto Pelota, the Spanish international is not keen on signing a contract extension and looking for a new club in another continent. He claims that Alonso has set his sights on joining the Los Angeles Galaxy or New York Red Bulls next summer.

Madrid are ready to allow Alonso go on a free transfer after his contract runs down and the midfielder is looking for a move to the West along with his family.

“Xabi Alonso believes his Real Madrid cycle has finished and wants, with his family, playing in a new league, in another country and experiences another culture,” Estrada was quoted as saying in Punto Pelota.

“There is talk that he could go to England, France or Italy, but his destination is in another continent. Alonso wants to play in the U.S.”

“After the Tolosa are two franchises in Major League Soccer (MLS), the New York Red Bulls and Los Angeles Galaxy. Alonso is about to turn 32, and if just one of these two sets, signed for the next two years,” he added.
