The 2012/2013 La Liga season began on 18 August 2012, and will end on 1 June 2013. Real Madrid are the defending champions after winning the 2011–12 La Liga campaign. As in the previous years, Nike will provide the official ball for all matches, with a new Nike Maxim Liga BBVA football to be used throughout the season for all matches.

Villarreal, Sporting Gijon and Racing Santander were relegated to the 2012/13 Segunda Division and replacing them are Deportivo La Coruna, Celta Vigo and Real Valladolid. Villarreal were relegated after twelve years, Gijon after surviving for four years, while Racing ended the longest period in La Liga in its history of ten years.

Deportivo made an immediate return to Primera Liga as the Segunda Division champions, Celta Vigo was promoted after a five year absence and Valladolid returned after two seasons.
