Sevilla president Jose Castro has confirmed that the club is very close to completing the signing of Chelsea forward Gael Kakuta. The Andalusian club are also working hard on signing Dnipro’s Yevhen Konoplyanka.

“It’s very close and we can say it’s a question of hours (before it is confirmed). With the Ukrainian (on Konoplyanka) we’re working hard as we are in other areas of the team,” said club president Jose Castro

Last week, Sevilla’s Sporting director Monchi said in an interview with AS that the club was closing on a deal for Kakuta. Now, it seems like it is all but done, the club is ironing out the final details before they can confirm publicly.

Kakuta’s career at Chelsea is a true reflection of why the London club have failed to produce top talents from their academy in the past 10 years.

Chelsea had to face court battles to sign him in 2007. He was seen as a highly promising youngster, but he never did justice to his talent. Or may be he wasn’t allowed to grow at the London properly.

The 23-year-old was promoted to the first team in 2009, but he hardly made any first-team action with the Blues. In the past six years, he has made only six first team appearances for Chelsea.

He was caught in the vortex of Chelsea’s vicious loan-cycle, and sent on loan to a whole host of clubs in different countries. He has failed to seal a permanent move anywhere. Sevilla therefore represents a big opportunity for him, where he would be given the platform he craved.

The attacking midfield position at Chelsea is choc-a-block with world class players, even the likes Juan Cuadrado is struggling to get regular games. The club has made a right decision in letting him go on a permanent basis. It is up to the player now to fulfil his true potential.
