Croatian playmaker Mateo Kovacic has been attracting interest from several European heavyweights over the last year. The young central midfielder is regarded as one of the finest young talents around and has been linked with moves away from the San Siro next summer.

According to Corriere dello Sport, European Champions Real Madrid are interested in a January move. Following a three month injury layoff to Luka Modric, the Spanish giants are looking to strengthen their midfield options with the likes of Lucas Silva and Mateo Kovacic.

However, Inter Milan are reluctant to lose their prized asset and have begun negotiations for an improved new deal.  Carlo Ancelotti is believed to be an admirer of the Croatian and would very much like to add the technically proficient central midfielder as an alternative to Modric.

According to the Italian outlet, the club hierarchy is scheduled to meet with the player and his agent next week and the contract could be signed before the end of this year. Regardless, Italian clubs have always been willing sellers for the right price and should an offer of 30 million plus arrive, it is likely that Kovacic will be playing his football at a different club soon.
