It took a little longer than expected, but the FA Cup fourth round is finally all set.
The twelve replays were scheduled to be played last Tuesday and Wednesday, but thanks to poor weather, three of the ties were postponed until yesterday, and all three were decided by penalties.
The most notable result of Tuesday’s replays was League One Bristol Rovers’ penalty triumph over Fulham at the Memorial Stadium.
After a goalless 120 minutes, Chris Lines got things started for the home side by netting his try, and then Rovers keeper Steve Phillips put things squarely in their advantage by saving Jimmy Bullard’s effort.
Paul Konchesky, Aaron Hughes, and David Healy all netted for Fulham, but it wasn’t to be enough, as there were no misses for the League One side. Substitute Craig Disley went up fifth, and he was the fifth Rover to make his kick, which sent the Cottagers crashing out of the competition.
Premiership bottom dwellers Derby had a close call at Sheffield Wednesday, as the Rams fell behind in the 10th minute to a Steve Watson goal. But, Kenny Miller’s 47th minute equalizer meant extra time, and then penalties, at Hillsborough.
In the shootout, Wednesday’s fate was sealed when they missed their first two attempts, as Derby hit on all of theirs, including Craig Fagan’s decisive effort that wrapped up a 4-2 shootout victory and booked a home tie with Preston.
In the other replay, Billy Paynter was hero then villain two times over, as League Two Barnet advanced to the fourth round by defeating League One Swindon 2-0 on penalties, after the tie had finished 1-1 in regular and extra time.
Paynter put the visitors up 1-0 in the 42nd minute, but gifted Barnet a 53rd minute equalizer with an own goal. In the penalty shootout, the striker stepped up first and missed. Three Swindon misses later, Barnet’s place in the fourth round was set.
Fourth-round action takes place this weekend, starting with League One Southend hosting Championship side Barnsley
