Everton have awarded goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenberg with a new contract, according to the Echo.

The contract of the Dutchman was originally meant to expire at the end of the upcoming season but his fresh terms means that he will remain at Goodisan Park till the summer of 2020.

The 35-year-old is the second-choice goalkeeper for Marco Silva’s side and has so far played in all six of their pre-season friendlies in the absence of first-choice Jordan Pickford who starred for England during the recent World Cup in Russia.

Pickford is expected to be between the sticks when Everton start the Premier League campaign against newly promoted Wolves

Stekelenberg offers experience to the Toffees squad and he will also be able to provide quality cover in the event that Pickford needs to be rested or is injured.

Stelekenberg who was part of the Dutch side which reached the final of the 2010 World Cup can also act as a mentor for younger players within the side due to his vast experience at the highest level.
