Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is believed to on the verge of signing a new, £200,000 a week deal, days after his proposed move to Real Madrid collapsed.

According to reports in the Guardian, De Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes, arrived at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground to sort out the goalkeeper’s future. He met United manager, Louis van Gaal, and the club’s secretary, John Alexander, with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward out on a business trip to London.

It is believed there is a very good chance of a buyout clause being inserted into De Gea’s new contract as it would mean there will be very less chance of similar events happening to what the player went through this summer. The buyout clause will be from De Gea’s side which will help him decide independently on a move in the future should any club trigger it.

The news of De Gea signing a new deal will represent a dramatic about turn by the Spaniard after bridges between him and the club were seemingly broken following his failure to secure a deadline day move to Real Madrid, due to some last minute technicalities.

Van Gaal appeared to have soured his relation with De Gea when he accused him of wanting away during the summer, which has so far resulted in De Gea not managing a single minute in the 2015/16 season for the Red Devils.

However, with next summer’s Euro 2016 looming on the horizon, De Gea needs regular playing time to usurp Spain’s number one, Iker Casillas, and his bid will be helped by signing the new deal now that Real Madrid have distanced themselves from signing him this season.

Earlier yesterday, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez distanced his club from De Gea and hinted the player would sign a contract extension at Manchester United, as he believes the goalkeeper has to do what is best for his career. The 24-year-old made his first appearance of the season for Spain in their Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia earlier this week.

“We will certainly not sign De Gea in January. They don’t become free. The great players are never free. The ones that arrive for free and that are available are mediocre players. It’s difficult that a player will remain a year without playing. De Gea has to do what is best for his career, said Perez.

The current situation with De Gea will only be seen as a fresh start by the club after what was a summer of uncertainty with their number one. With Sergio Romero showing up as an inadequate replacement for the Spaniard in the Red Devils’ loss to Swansea in their last game, all eyes will be on De Gea whether or not he gets the nod for an important league clash against Liverpool at the weekend.
