Liverpool have confirmed their goalkeeper Danny Ward has joined Aberdeen on-loan for a year on Saturday.

The 22-year-old signed a new long-term deal at Anfield after he was included in the first team squad in the final few fixtures of the 2014-15 season by Brendan Rodgers. After that, the Welshman will join the Scottish Premiership club for the upcoming season.

A statement on Liverpool’s official website read, “Liverpool have confirmed Danny Ward has joined Aberdeen on a season-long loan.”

“Earlier this week, Ward penned a new long-term contract with the Reds. The Welshman has been a regular fixture between the sticks for the club’s U21 team since making the switch to Merseyside in January 2012 from Wrexham. Ward was named on the bench for Liverpool’s first team 23 times last season.”

Ward could make his debut for Aberdeen during the Sunday’s friendly with St Johnstone in Brechin. His loan move comes after the former Swansea manager secured the services of Adam Bogdan on a free transfer.

Bogdan will be the second choice keeper at the Merseyside club, behind Belgium international Simon Mignolet. Liverpool made sure they secured Ward’s services and then sent him on a season-long loan.

The former Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper’s arrival at Anfield allowed Ward to join the Scottish club on-loan. Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has expressed his delight after signing Welshman man from the Reds.

“I am delighted to get Danny on board. He is a young goalkeeper we have been aware of for some time. We are thankful to Liverpool and Brendan (Rodgers) in particular for allowing this to happen,” McInnes told Aberdeen’s official website.

“He is someone who is highly regarded at his club and they see the importance of getting him out on loan. Danny now has the task and challenge of playing football at a good level with us.

“We have real competition for places in all areas of the team, and we certainly now have that in the goalkeeping position.

“We believe Danny is going to have a good career as he goes forward and we are looking forward to the opportunity of working with him as part of his development.  He can also help us to be successful.”
