Emre CanLiverpool are edging closer towards their second summer signing after Bayer Leverkusen chief executive Michael Schade revealed the Reds have made a formal offer for their midfielder Emre Can.

Can has been vital for Leverkusen during the 2013-14 season and has been a key player in their midfield in his debut season. He completed his switch to BayArena after leaving Bayern Munich last summer.

The 20-year-old has a €12m release clause in his contract and according to the Guardian report, he has been linked with a move to Anfield. Schade admitted Liverpool have made a contact with German club in expressing their desire to sign Can.

“Until Tuesday, it was a rumour. Now I can confirm that an official offer from Liverpool is received by mail,” Schade told German newspaper Bild.

Meanwhile, Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voeller believes Can’s potential departure to Liverpool would benefit the Bundesliga outfit.

“The business would be lucrative. But that is not the sticking point. We are of the opinion that Emre would still do well one year with us. Roger Schmidt has already spoken with him, he is really into the player. And I am convinced that Can would be even better with Roger,” Voller said.

The Merseyside club already sealed a deal for Rickie Lambert from Southampton on Monday. Brendan Rodgers is moving towards making his second summer acquisition as he looks to bring in reinforcements to bolster Liverpool’s squad for the next season.

Meanwhile, Anfield legend Steve McManaman has urged the former Swansea boss to sign five to sign players this summer to meet the demands of the Champions League football next season.
