Manchester City v Tottenham preview
Tottenham take on high-flying Manchester City at the Eastlands in the first of two Carling Cup 07/08 quarterfinals being played tonight.
As Juande Ramos rebuilds Tottenham (in body and spirit) with next season in mind, he will know that while a Champions League spot is perhaps too far away for his injury-riddled side, his side has a good shot at a couple of decent cup runs and an outside chance of making it to the Uefa Cup (10 points difference may be too much if King is absent for the second half of the season). Tottenham will go into this game with a lot riding on this game and hopefully Ramos can help the players raise their standards as Tottenham have done in the past against big teams (not that City is a *big* team, but still).
Spurs are coming off an away win against Portsmouth and a home win against Manchester City in the league, games that will give the Tottenham players a lot of confidence.
Having said all the above, Manchester City still start the game tonight as favourites – not for their 4th placed perch in the Premier League or that it’s a home game but because Tottenham not conceding goals is a rarity (home or away) and the current Manchester City team is well equipped to pick their opponents off on quick counter attacks. And when you consider that Dawson and Robbie Keane will be missing from the Tottenham lineup as well, and all signs point to a Manchester City win.
Except that this is Tottenham, and when you expect them to disappoint they end up serving a thriller to remember for a long time. Let’s hope tonight is one of those games, because the other game is going to be a scrappy game of balls and no football.
