Buffon: “If I leave Juventus, I see myself in the Premiership”

Gianluigi “Gigi” Buffon was interviewed by Sky Sport Italia, and his remarks were published by the Milan sports daily, La Gazzetta dello Sport. Buffon discussed a potential transfer to England, the current dismal campaign of Juventus, Rafa Benitez, Italian hopes in South Africa and his choice for the next Azzurri manager.

If you have rarely read his comments before, I believe that you will find the Juventus #1 to be a rare example of candor and integrity. Should he come to England, it will be the Premiership’s gain and Serie A’s loss.

Potential Transfer

“My desire to leave Juventus is equal to that of the club to transfer me. Everything that concerns me will be in agreement with the club. At the moment, there is nothing on the table, but two weeks remain and something could still happen. Juventus has always been my priority. We shall see if it will be decided to proceed together.”

“My priority is to remain, but any decision will be made in accord with the club. In case of divorce, I see myself in the Premiership.”

The Season to Forget for Juventus

“Everything doesn’t have to be replayed. There are a few things and a few players to salvage. But some other things have to be reviewed which is the risk when you have seasons like this. Everyone is at fault and we players also made mistakes. At the start of the season, we thought that we had already become a team, but 4 or 5 results don’t suffice. Everyone made presumptions, most of all me. Ciro Ferrara (former manager) wasn’t at fault for the problems of a few players and Alberto Zaccheroni (current manager) is a very well-prepared manager.”

On Rafael Benitez

“His C.V. speaks for him. He gives the impression of a manager that knows how to handle difficult management situations. A professional through and through.”

On Italy’s Chances in South Africa

“I don’t think that we have a great chance, because we know how difficult it is to win a World Cup, but to repeat is even more difficult. (The last team to repeat was Brazil in 1962.) But if we present ourselves in an acceptable physical condition, we are a hard team to beat. On the other hand, if in an important tie we encounter physical problems, we will become a team that can be defeated. But if we are at 95 percent, we can take any result.”

On His Playing Future and the Next Azzurri Boss

“I’m 32 years old and believe that I still have 4 to 5 years to play at a high level. Who will manage Italy after Lippi? I see a young choice with enthusiasm, if we want someone still a little unknown. Or an experienced person that has managed a big club. I think, I hope, that Lippi remains. But if he can’t, seeing that Claudio Ranieri is very attached to AS Roma, it would please me to see Cesare Prandelli (current Fiorentina manager) or Alberto Zaccheroni of Juventus.”

If Gigi comes to England, where do you think he would have the most impact?
