Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeneß has advised Bayern Munich not to sign Marco Reus for the sake of the German Bundesliga.

The 62-year old is currently serving a three-and-a-half year prison sentence for tax evasion but it seems he still has some influence on the Bundesliga champions.

Uli Hoeneß was quoted by German newspaper Bild as saying:

“Will you not already be German champions by Christmas?”

Hoeneß was able to give this statement at a clearance whilst he met with his good friends Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Franz Beckenbauer.

Bayern Munich currently have a 14-point lead over Borussia Dortmund after only nine matches – the league is as good as won by the end of October.  Borussia Mönchengladbach are in second place, four points behind the Bavarians and not expected to be able to maintain a title challenge.

The 2013 UEFA Champions League winners have also signed Mario Götze and Robert Lewandowski from their closest title challengers.  It is not the first time Bayern have bought the best players from their nearest challengers – at the start of the millennium they purchased Michael Ballack, Lúcio and Zé Roberto from Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

In the past, they have purchased a group of star players from VfB Stuttgart, Karlsruher and Gladbach to starve off competition and build a team capable of blitzing the league.

Borussia Dortmund’s disastrous start to the season that has seen them take only seven points from their first nine games give them a lot of catch up work to do if they’re to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Failure to finish in the top four would surely see Marco Reus and the likes of Mats Hummels leave Signal Iduna Park in the summer.

This would be a massive boost to Premier League side Manchester United who have been strongly linked with the pair.  Liverpool were also strongly linked with a move for Reus over the summer.

If Uli Hoeneß is telling Bayern Munich not to sign Marco Reus, there’s a good chance they may very well listen to their former president…
