Saint-Etienne defender Loic Perrin has revealed that Arsenal have personally contacted him over a move in January. The French defender has been on the books of the Gunners for some time now.

In an interview reported by regional daily Le Progres, the 29 year-old said, “I was contacted personally. Arsenal is interested. But for now, there is still no contact with Saint-Etienne”.

The French club have been defiant in their hope of keeping the centre-back at the club, and Bernard Caiazzo, the Chairman of the club’s supervisory board, said that there still a long way to go before any deal can be struck.

Arsene Wenger is under big pressure to recruit a defender in January. His baffling decision in the summer to let go so many members of his backline without bringing in suitable replacements has backfired. Injuries to Laurent Koscielny and Mathieu Debuchy have backfired, and have often required the likes of Nacho Monreal and Calum Chambers to play out of position. 17 year-old Hector Bellerin has also needed to be called in as an emergency right-back at times.

Arsenal have finished in the top 4 in every season since Wenger took charge back in 1996, but are under serious danger of missing out this time around. They are currently 6th in the table, 3 points away from the Champions League places and the way they played in the 2-0 defeat against Southampton last Sunday was hardly encouraging.
