Arsenal are set to be dealt a blow as their attempts to sign André-Pierre Gignac are coming to an end as the french striker is close to agreeing a new contract in Marseille.

The 28-year old is in the final year of his contract at the Stade Vélodrome and had been linked with a move to both Arsenal and Liverpool on a free transfer earlier this month as a result.

French newspaper L’Equipe is now reporting that Marseille president Vincent Labrune is working hard on a deal to get his striker to put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension.

It is thought that André-Pierre Gignac would favour a stay in France as oppose to moving abroad.

The French international is currently the top scorer in Ligue 1 with 10 goals in as many matches for the league leaders.

Gignac is in his fifth season with Marseille after joining from Toulouse in 2010.  He has scored 48 goals in 127 league appearances for the 1992 UEFA Champions League winners.  His 16 goals for the club last season was his best return since scoring 24 for Toulouse during the 2008-09 season.

Arsenal currently have Danny Welbeck, Olivier Giroud and Yaya Sanogo as out-and-out strikers on their books, whilst both Theo Walcott and Alexis Sánchez are both capable of playing that role in the team too.
