With every passing day, it seems like Arsenal are backing away from the race to sign Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain. The Argentine is a great scorer (scored 36 goals in 2015/16 and set up a new record in Serie A), playing at the peak of his career and there’s absolutely no reason why Arsenal should not sign him.
The player wants to move outside Italy and Premier League remains his preferred destination. However, he would cost around €94m, a fee that Arsenal would unlikely to pay for a single player until Arsene Wenger is around while Napoli are reluctant to keep him until their valuations are met.
Arsenal had reportedly considered a €50m plus Olivier Giroud deal for Higuain but it seems Napoli aren’t interested in a player plus cash deal at the moment. Juventus have shown reportedly shown an interest in Higuain and may present a better offer than the Gunners. Instead of engaging in a bidding war, Arsenal have now shifted their attention elsewhere.
The Gunners desperately need to sign a top class striker this summer. Giroud has produced a decent goal record but he cannot be trusted to make a big difference in big games.
According to Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport, the Gunners are reportedly looking to sign Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi as Wenger is keen to bolster his attacking department.
Icardi has time and again reiterated his desire to stay (even Inter want him to continue as well) but he could be tempted by a big money offer and the lure of playing in the Champions League. The Gunners are reportedly weighing up a bid of up to £46m for the Nerazzurri striker. Good luck, Arsene!
