According to reports from English media outlet Independent who have cited Italian newspaper La Republica, Arsenal are plotting a summer move for Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli. It is believed that Arsene Wenger has earmarked the 20 year old as a replacement for the struggling Per Mertesacker.

Romagnoli who is on loan at Sampdoria has been in great form this season, as the Italian club are sixth in the Serie A standings, just three away from the final Champions League berth. The Italy U-21 defender has impressed Wenger and with the player out of contract in the summer, he could be available on a free transfer.

Romagnoli has been tipped to have a bright future for Italy and is a product of the excellent Roma academy. The defender is adept at playing either as a centre back in the back four or as a left sided defender in the back three. Moreover, he is brilliant in the air and is an aerial threat from set-pieces.

The report has cited an earlier report from Telegraph which claims that Wenger could replace the struggling Per Mertesacker. The German has been out of sorts this term and the German could well be deemed surplus to replacement at the Emirates.

Mertesacker hasn’t also been helped with constant changes in the back four and was recently dropped for the Premier league encounter against Everton last week after having a torrid night in the Champions League against Monaco in the first leg of the round of 16 at home.
