Alex Morgan and Team USA are ready for glory

Some deem the Champions League as the most important event on the soccer calendar, others the World Cup, however for the United States woman’s team it is clear that the goal of winning the gold in the Olympics this summer is their pinnacle. AT&T’s Olympic video series, ‘My Journey’ looks at seven of the United States’ finest athletes and tracks their training and what they have been doing to prepare for the London Games.

In the case of Team USA forward Alex Morgan, the Olympics are the highlight of her career to date. It is clear to see the dedication the skilful attacker has put into training for the event and her determination to claim victory.

At the tender age of 23-years old she missed out on the Beijing Games back in 2008, where Pia Sundhage’s side claimed glory in China, defeating Brazil in the final. The Seattle Sounders attacker is making quiet the name for herself on the global stage, and with an impressive 29 international goals to her name already could well go down in the history books. Despite winning the Fifa under-20 World Cup in 2008 and the WPS Championship in 2011, Alex knows the pain of defeat, as she was part of the USA side beaten in the final of the 2011 World Cup by Japan on penalties.

Despite the Olympics being the holy grail for most athletes in other sports, the Games are not considered a priority by European male footballers, but as the video shows, Alex and Team USA would consider gold this summer as the highest possible honour. The sacrifices, added training sessions and determination to improve are clear in the video.

Given the dedication to training, team spirit and motivation to win, Team USA will take some beating this summer and other nations in the competition can expect a tough challenge anytime they face the holders. Alex may not have won the Olympics back in 2008, but the heartache of losing out in the World Cup will clearly be a motivator for her and her team-mates to bring home the gold.

A win over North Korea means that Team USA prevail through their group undefeated and Alex and the side will not be happy with anything other than glory this summer.
