Defence was one of the major problems that hung like an Albatross on Brendan Rodgers’ shoulders for the entire last season. With his team, having conceded 50 goals last season in the league, it became clear that Rodgers need to give an extra attention to bolster that department. Sometimes tweaking the philosophy can be a good solution, but Rodgers probably feels that new additions could make a huge difference.

Already, Liverpool have signed Dejan Lovren from Southampton and going by the reports, the Reds are closing in on two more defenders as well. The Times claim that Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo will undergo a medical today before completing his loan move to Liverpool, while reports from Spain suggest Liverpool are close to sealing a deal for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno as well.

The Times claimed last month that Liverpool would also make an attempt to sign Alberto Moreno and according to local Sevilla-based newspaper, Estadio Deportivo, the Reds are very close to securing a deal for the young Spaniard.

It was a strange kind of transfer saga really. Back in June, it seemed like the deal is all but just a formality, but, Liverpool delayed, uncertain over his price tag while the deal had hit a snag. Sevilla were demanding a fee in the region of €20m as they didn’t want to lose another promising player, having already sold Ivan Rakitic to Barcelona.

Liverpool reestablished the good relationship between both the clubs, after sending Iago Aspas on a season long loan, with a view of letting him join the Andalusian club permanently. The report claim, Liverpool about to sign the 22-year-old for €20m, plus €3m bonuses, depending on his performances. On Monday, that is today, an emissary from Liverpool are expected be in Spain to finalize the deal. It is understood that Moreno will sign a five-year-deal at Anfield.
