According to reports in the Guardian, Arsenal are ready to spend heavily in the upcoming January transfer window. Manager Arsene Wenger claimed that he is ready to splash the cash if the right player is available in the winter transfer market, “I’m not scared to spend money. If you go out with me one night, you will understand that.”

Jason Burt of the Daily Telegraph also reported that the Gunners are willing to commit around £20m and their priority would be to bring in a centre back and a central defensive midfielder. The North London club made five signings in the summer but are really short on central defenders in the back four. Wenger had earlier sold Thomas Vermaelen for £15m to Barcelona in the summer.

The Report also states that Arsenal are set to bring in Ipswich Town defender Tyrone Mings from a fee worth around £8m in January. The 21 year old is expected to progress as a central defender like Calum Chambers with experience. Winston Reid of West Ham United, who is in the last year of his contract could have been a viable option but the Gunners are not interested in the player. Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk has also been linked but the rumours have cooled down in the past few weeks.

Wenger also said that he needs to make the signings to be competitive and fight for silverware, “We have to show that in the final part of the season because we go now in the Premier League where we need to win the games. After we have the FA Cup and the Champions League and without defensive solidity we have no future.”
